That mannequin standing in the store window has been around for centuries, or at least the mannequin itself has been. The mannequin plays a very important role in the sales of the store. The way it can be positioned is the key that might draw in prospective customers and profits. The word mannequin means little man and being displayed back to the seventeen hundreds. These older ones were usually made of wood, wax, plaster or sometimes even fabric.
There are certain types of mannequins that are used in different store windows. Children’s’, women’s and men’s clothing departments will often times dress them up with what merchandise they want to sell. There are even mannequin designers, one who will put the clothes on the mannequins in such a way that shows off the lines of the clothing. Some will be missing the hands, legs or even heads. Of course the store is selling the cloths not the mannequin so clothing must be displayed accordingly.
Today you will find many different colors of mannequins, skin tones, hair and even painted fingernails. These will accent the clothing and make the consumer want to buy it because it looks good on the mannequin with these different features, maybe the same as the customers.
For example, you want to buy some sportswear, you go to the sporting goods store and in the front window you see the mannequin dressed in the outfit you just know will look good on you. You go in, try it on and you buy it. All because of the mannequin was dressed like you want to be dressed. Then a lady is looking for a formal gown for that special occasion. She goes into a fine department store and stops in her tracks. Seeing a beautiful mannequin dressed to the nines. She is posed with her arms up just a bit and a little evening bag is draped on her wrist. Her hair is done up in a chignon and her makeup is flawless. Don’t think for a moment that will not sell the dress. It does and it will.
Posing the mannequins is something not everyone can do. They must be in such poses that are artistic and creative. Using the imagination will not only make the mannequin look almost real but will sell the clothes. Remember store windows are usually quite small so one will have to be aware of the lighting, other props and the clothing that will be displayed. Many will have a certain theme, say for the holidays, Easter dresses, or children’s play clothes.
Mannequins that will be used as floor models must be placed in a certain way as they should blend in with the theme and color scheme as the rest of the floor. Almost the same rules apply with a window mannequin, but the space is not as big. Mannequins can also be grouped together as maybe a family on an outing of some sort.
