how to use plaster of paris to make a dress form?
xI was planning to make plaster of paris dress form for myself for my sewing needs. I have heard about cello tape dress forms too. but on the internet i came across a news that said a girl who put her hands in the plaster of paris and it permanently got stuck and she lost her fingers. I am wondering what is the right way to plaster cast? Do i have to apply something on the skin before plaster casting ? any idea?
You can use plaster bandages for doing this, but:
1) you need to protect your skin with a slip layer of some sort (plastic bag, stockinette, a couple pair of pantyhose (one right way around, one slipped on over arms and torso (cut a head hoe), etc.)
You'd also be well advised to grease up before the fabric or plastic layers.
2) plaster heats as it cures. You may overheat badly and possibly require medical assistance.
3) you must stay perfectly still while the plaster cures, and be cut out of it (will require shears that can handle it) at just the right stage. Then you have to quickly put the shell back together correctly aligned so it can finish curing.
4) it's very messy. Put down a HUGE tarp.
There are much better ways to do it -- packing tape (not cellophane tape) is much more reliable and results in a sturdy and pinnable form. One of the best descriptions of the process is in Sew News for 2006; the August and September issues, or in Crawford's DVD: http://www.amazon.com/Custom-Dress-Form-Connie-Amaden-Crawford/dp/B001ATCDAK
