Do male gerbils tend to be less active than female gerbils?
I was just wondering because I really like gerbils (never had any though, my mom doesn't like them) and researching how alike to rats they are. I know with rats males are more content to sit on you and cuddle and all that while the females don't really stop moving (my don't anyway, unless they are in their cage sleeping). Are gerbils the same way? That is the only thing about them I can't find. Thanks
From what I've heard, both males and females are active and agile, The difference is when they get older, males are more likely to become less fast and agile as well as less active while females stay active almost their entire lives.
Whether they will let you hold them or sit with you really depends on how tame they are and their personality and temperament. Gerbils can be a little skittish, especially if you get them from a petstore instead of a reputable breeder. However, once hand tamed they do become very friendly. They are very curious and active animals though, I'm not sure if there are any gerbils that will sit quietly.
My older pair are about 2 years old, and used to be class pets. As a result, they are not really of the like-to-be-held variety. They will let me pet them, run to greet me when they hear my voice, and so forth but they don't like to be held much.
My younger pair are approximately 8 weeks and I've only owned them for about 2 weeks, they are still in the process of being hand tamed. Like the other two, they respond to my voice positively, and are beginning to let me pet them. One will sit on my hand for short periods of time, the other will not.
I've heard if you get them from a breeder, sometimes they will be extremely tame from day 1 and will run up your arm, let you hold and pet them, and so forth. It really depends on the gerbil and their background.
