How long until a guinea pig is full-sized?
I know guinea pigs reach sexual maturity at a very young age, but at what age is a guinea pig of full grown size? Is it different for males or females? I have a five month old guinea pig and he still is quite small, so I am wondering if he's just going to be a little squirt or if he still has time to keep growing.
Guinea pigs are precocious at birth, meaning they have teeth, fur and their eyes open and the ability to survive away from mom after just a few days. That said, it does take some time for them to mature and grow up.
Females sexually mature and are able to breed at 2 to 3 months and males 3 to 4 months. Full size may happen slightly sooner but during this time span, on average a well fed Guinea pig will reach full size around 3 months of age.
Don't forget to supplement with foods rich in vitamin C as its a requirement for them.
There is a decent amount of variation in size between strains, and you can always get a runt. If he is eating well and has access to vitamin C rich foods, at 5 months it is full grown. It will only get 'fatter' rather than larger. They should weigh 25 to 35 ounces full grown. That is just under 2 pounds. Try weighing yours on a scale and see how close to the range he is.
