does any one remember an old horror movie where a lady keeps a mans head in a hat box?
I remember the scene where she goes upstairs in a trance and gets the box down and holds the head up by the hair then it whispers to her to go and kill someone.
It could be this one:
The Thing That Couldn't Die (1958)
starring William Reynolds, Andra Martin, effrey Stone, Carolyn Kearney, Peggy Converse, Robin Hughes (best-known as the title character in "The Howling Man" episode of "Twilight Zone")
IMDb synopsis:
A psychically gifted young woman discovers a centuries-old crate buried on her aunt's ranch. Opening it, her family discovers the living head of Gideon Drew, a 16th century devil worshiper who was beheaded by Sir Francis Drake.
IMDb review: ***SPOILERS***
The scene is an isolated guest ranch in California, where various beautiful people are spending a relaxing holiday, accompanied by the ranch's matronly owner, her slimy ranch foreman, and a dim-witted hired hand. One of the guests is a beautiful young woman who is clairvoyant; she finds hidden and buried things through divining. Eventually, she identifies a spot to dig for treasure, and an old chest is dug up. The hired hand opens the box to reveal the disembodied head of a 400-year-old evil sorcerer. After being underground for so long, the head needs to catch up on unfinished business in a hurry, so it hypnotizes most of the ranch's guests. To do this, the head appears in unusual places (window ledges, closet shelves, hat boxes) and whispers inaudible, mystical instructions to its victims. After a couple of deaths, the head, using the clairvoyant one, identifies a location to dig up its body. The opening of the coffin is the highlight of the movie, and it's quite entertaining. The headless body stands up, whereupon one of the hypnotized women gently reattaches the head. The reunited sorcerer now decides to kill everyone. Bullets don't work, so the movie's hero produces a magical amulet that was discovered at the beginning of the film. The bad guy jumps back in his coffin, whereupon he is transformed into a skeleton, marking the film's ending. After 400 years in a box, the head only gets reunited with its body for about 60 seconds. Such a pity.

it's possible that this isn't your film, but it's the first one that came to mind. It's an odd little low-budget film, but I've always liked it, especially because it shows divining aka water witching, a skill that runs in our family.
