Do you know where I can find a styrofoam ball that is 2 feet in diameter?
I've been to Michaels and Walmart and searched the internet for two hours ... all I've found was a hollowed ball - "smoothfoam" - which might work except it's $48.00. That's way too much! It's for a Halloween costume's head piece. Any ideas?
Have you ever made a paper mache' ball? You take a balloon, or maybe a "punch bag" the size you want. After inflated, tie some string to the knotted end which serve as a hanger.
Take a bunch of newspaper, rip it into long strips about 2-3 inches wide. Make a watery paste of water and flour. Dip newspaper pcs in paste, pull out of paste and gently run fingers down strip to get most of paste off. Then begin covering the blown up balloon. Do not worry if piece rips, and you have little pieces. They work also.
Keep doing this until you have one completely covered coat done. Now hang up by string and allow to thoroughly dry. When dry, repeat until you have 4-5 coverings. You may want a few more layers for more stability.
You can even use the paper to shape ears, nose, eye ridges, pointed head.. I made a shrunken head this way. It was eerily realistic. Had it hanging in my studio for awhile.
Pop balloon. Cut a hole for you head...and then do face.
This can be painted, glittered.
You have made a head that is very similar to the ones made for Mardi Gras or stage plays.
