how to personalize a mannequin head?
I bought a cheap mannequin head at the market for a life size marionette I'm making, but I absolutely HATE the mannequin's face. Thus, I need something to edit the features. Clay will just crack and fall off so my art teacher recommended paper mache with a strong glue. any other ideas? I'm not in the states though, so I can't run down to michaels and pick up any fancy little rubber things or special materials. (art stores are hard to find in my area and when you do they're very expensive)
I think I'd recommend "Paper clay" but you may not be able to get it in your area since you mentioned no Michael's or anything. Paper Mache would probably work, but it would take alot more effort & make a lot bigger mess. If you can skip altering the face & just change its feature with paint, I'd recommend getting spray paint (Krylon or something for outside use or car paint, it's the same price) & paint it all one color. After it's dry you can paint on it with other paints (Probably oil based since it's going on top of spray paint) but If you don't have artist oils, you can use regular house paints. (Just make sure & use it in a well ventilated area, the fume warnings on spray & oil paints are real & serious.)
You can even use nail polish to paint details onto the face, give it eye color & makeup for lips & eyes, stain the cheeks with red food coloring or the whole head with tea even. Add fake eye lashes & eye brows to make it more appealing & personal. You could also skip the whole face-like features & paint something else on it, designs or one solid color with highlights. Glue jewels or glitter or paper cut outs onto it.
Oh, another way of "altering" it is use paintable caulking (yes for like bathtubs or windows) It's messy, but will work. Or even a hot glue gun to add texture, though I don't think glue from glue guns are paintable. Party supply stores have masks & feathers & costume accessories & even face paint you can also dress it up with.
Try all of the above or you can stick a paper bag over it's head & call him Jack!
