How to tell if a material is flammable or dangerous?
After a trip to Liberty in London I've been inspired to do some craft stuff on my own. Most stuff is harmless or easy to do such as making quilts etc., but I would quite like to turn my hand to some alternative furniture. I had this idea to change an unwanted male torso (mannequin, thick white material) into a lamp, so having a bulb on the inside. I will not be hooking up the electricity myself so it's not a question of trying to make it safe- it's asking how I can tell if the material of the mannequin itself is flammable or otherwise unsafe. This idea may never happen or it may not work or I may just twist fairly lights around the outside- but in theory, if I wanted to try this, how could I tell the material is safe?
Most new mannequins are made of fiberglass, years ago, they were made of thin plaster. For the most part, they aren't flammable. If you do have it wired for electric lights be sure the wires are run through a brass tube from top to bottom. Using fairy lights and wrapping the torso will be ok. Unique hobby, but alternative thinking !
